BT switches off Meter Pulse Dectection (MPD)

Discontinuation of BT Meter Pulse Detection Service

Also in this section

The British Telecom (BT) Meter Pulse Detection Service is primarily used within the hotel industry to enable the charging of telephone calls to rooms. Some times known as call logging, hotel billing, and call charge service.

As of the 1st of November 2007 BT is discontinuing this service. If you receive this service from British Telecom you may recently have received a letter from BT regarding the replacement of BT MPD service with a new service called Caller Party Answer (CPA). The letter advises you to contact your telephone system maintainer to find out whether your telephone system is compatible with this new service.

Some analogue systems will not be compatible with this new service. If you currently use the meter pulses through the reception console to bill your guests for their calls you will need to make alternative plans.

As part of the information we have been given by BT we understand that they will ‘reverse poll’ your telephone lines when they change the service. This will stop you from making or receiving calls through the system and measures need to be taken to stop this from happening. We can either arrange an engineer's visit on the date of the change or install some switches enabling you to change the line polarity when the fault occurs.

Generally the systems affected by this change in service will be Mitel SX20, Mitel SX200, Mitel SX50 and Mitel Imagination as well as some of BT's own branded products.

There are two different options we can offer to you to overcome this issue.

  1. Upgrade to a new digital telephone system

By upgrading you can take advantage of new technology, reducing ongoing telephony costs and improving telephone features available to you and your customers. Many times we are able to make enough savings on calls and line rental to pay for the rental of a new telephone system.

  1. Install Call Billing Software

This will link to your current system (or a new system at a later date) and enable you to bill guests for their calls on a pence per minute basis through the system.

If you have received a letter from BT about MPD or are concerned how this might effect you and your system with us please call our sales team on 0161 869 0324 for further information.
